Before
This patient came to me 23 years ago for breast augmentation. This was during the height of the silicone breast implant controversy and gel implants could not be used for breast augmentation. I placed 240 cc CUI textured, round saline implants above the muscle. This took her A cup breasts up to a C cup. She had a great result and seemed very happy.Â
Unknown to me, a few years later she went to another plastic surgeon and had her implants exchanged for 575 cc saline implants, giving her D cup breasts. These are huge implants by any measure.Â
Over the years, she experienced sagging of her breasts as well as chronic discomfort from the weight of her breasts. She returned to me to about having her breasts lifted and her implants changed out for smaller ones. This type of revision can be very difficult because the prior surgeries raise the risks of skin breakdown and other complications. Lifts leave more external scars than a simple breast augmentation.Â
Young patients sometimes seek implants that are much too large for them making them more likely to have problems later. I would never have recommended such large implants for her. My goal is to please my patients but also to advise them on what is reasonable to do. My goal for breast augmentation is fuller breasts that look natural, are well proportioned, and will be less likely to create future problems for them. It is important to remember that breast augmentation is an inherently unnatural thing to do and long consequences cannot always be predicted.Â
