Before
This 19 year old young lady desired breast augmentation to look more proportioned. After a thorough discussion of the pros and cons of implants, included a detailed discussion of known and potential complications, she elected to proceed with the surgery. Because of the age, she had to settle for saline implants as gel implants are not recommended for patients younger than 22. I would have chosen saline in any event as my preferred implant for young patients. This is much younger than my usual patient but she was very mature and knew her own mind. She wanted this for herself as there was no significant other in the picture. She was a bit of a challenge because her breasts were widely spaced, and her nipples were set somewhat more to the side than ideal.
After
She is shown 6 months after augmentation with Mentor smooth, round, moderate profile saline implants. The implants are 275 cc, and they were filled to 300 cc. Her bra size has gone from a "barely a B cup" to a 32 D cup from Victoria's Secret. VS makes their bras small so she is probably a full C cup in most bras. She is very happy. This patient demonstrates one of the potential side effects of even relatively small implants in young patients with tight skin: stretch marks. Somewhere between one and three months after her surgery, she developed pink stretch marks on both breasts. Although is it not common, I always prepare young patients for this possibility. Stretch marks are permanent but they do fade with time. She was unconcerned about this. She retained normal sensitivity in her nipples.
