Before
This very healthy 79 year old lady presented for bilateral breast reconstruction after cancer surgery removed both breasts. She presented some challenges with very thin skin over her chest and multiple scars, including very low positioned mastectomy scars. Her age was not really and issue as she was in excellent physical shape. After a thorough discussion of the pros and cons, and thinking things over, she elected to proceed.Â
After
Her reconstruction was done in four stages. In the first, tissue expanders were placed to create enough space for implants. After a few months and successful expansion, the second stage removed these expanders and replaced them with permanent silicone gel implants. These are round, smooth, 400 cc Mentor implants. At the third stage, I created nipples and did a touch up of the right breast. The fourth stage was a simple tattooing to provide for color. Her results are imperfect but, given the circumstances, very acceptable. She is pleased and so am I. Her new breasts are very soft and she can wear normal clothes without concern about prostheses.
