Inverted nipples are not uncommon and many women are bothered by them due to the appearance, and the condition may make nursing difficult or impossible. They can corrected with a simple procedure in which the nipple is divided in half. Small fibrous bands that are pulling the nipple in are cut and then tissues are sutured in a way that prevents the nipple from being pulled in again. It is very successful however can affect feeling to the nipple area and will likely eliminate the ability to breast feed later. Woman who have normal nipples and develop an inverted nipple later in life should have this looked at immediately as it may be a sign of breast cancer.
