Before
This lady had a strong family history of breast cancer, including the breast cancer gene mutation. She was tested and was positive for the mutation as well, making her very likely to develop breast cancer. She elected to have prophylactic (preventitive) removal of her breasts and desired reconstruction. Because her breasts were not large or saggy, I felt that she would be a good candidate for a nipple-sparing procedure. This would result in a more natural looking breast yet have a high success rate in preventing cancer. This was presented to her and she wished to have this done.
After
Her surgeon did a nice job with the mastectomies and I immediately inserted tissue expanders to restore her shape. She expanded very nicely. Her final implants, placed at a second procedure, were Mentor MemoryShape, anatomically contoured, textured, silicone gel implants with a volume of 525 cc. If not for the mastectomy scar, she would look more like a breast augmentation patient than a breast cancer survivor. Her breasts are very soft and natural. As expected, the nipples do not have much feeling in them but this is a small trade off for the otherwise wonderful outcome.
