Patient - Breast Reduction

Before
This very young patient presented with massively large, heavy breasts, causing her constant pain in her upper back, shoulders, and neck. Her bra size was a 38 DD. Her right was slightly larger than the left. According to insurance criteria, I would have to remove 485 grams from each breast to qualify her for coverage. I was confident we could do that. Because she was young, I counseled her extensively on the surgery so she would understand the risks and downside, including extensive scars, uncertain results therapeutically and aesthetically, possible loss of sensitivity in her nipples, and possible inability to nurse children later. She did not hesitate to schedule surgery.
After
She is shown one year after surgery. I removed 443 grams (about 1 lb) from the left and 496 grams from the right. The right is still slightly more full but not enough to be a concern. Her symptoms all went away. Her bra size is a C/D cup. She retained normal sensitivity in the nipples. She loves her new breasts. She has very nice shape and good symmetry. Her scars are still faintly pink and slightly wider than ideal. The pink will eventually fade away and the scars should be fairly inconspicuous. Time will tell if she can breast feed children.
