Before
This 4 year old girl caught two fingers of her left hand in a door at her day care center. She sustained crushing injuries to the tips of her long and ring fingers. The bones were fractured at the tips, the nails were avulsed, and the tip of the long finger was very nearly amputated. I repaired these in the operating room using surgical magnifying telescopes to align the fingers and repair the nail beds. The avulsed nails were used to temporarily protect the nail bed repair.
After
She is shown 10 months after the injury. You cannot tell the fingers were ever injured. She has no problems with use of her hands for any purpose. Even I am amazed, and I did the work! This is a testament to the healing powers of children, who do incredibly well even with devastating injuries.
